THE AESTHETICS OF WHIMSY

i have shared the work of jacob t. swinney before. but i honestly cannot get enough. he is a constant source of inspiration for me.

today i'm sharing a video he did on spike jonze and what he calls "the aesthetics of whimsy." it is a gorgeous lesson in film and chock-full of visual inspiration.

from swinnney: "Despite the fact that the look of his films often takes a back seat to bizarre stories and quirky characters, Spike Jonze has crafted a uniquely whimsical visual style over the course of his four feature films. Making the most out of simple elements such as lens flares, floating camera movement, centered framing, and wide-angle close-ups, Jonze creates an atmosphere that appears to be lifted straight from the pages of a fairytale storybook. His camera is fascinated with the mundane; intently exploring fabrics and materials, finding beauty and significance in the obscure and unnoticed. Dust particles floating in a beam of sunlight become hypnotic. The delicate plaster of marionettes feels as lifelike as human flesh. The matted fur wrapped around a child strikes us with an overwhelming sense of marvel and nostalgia.

In his first two films, Being John Malkovich (1999) and Adaptation (2002), Jonze used a much more subdued sense of whimsy to express the playfully dark atmospheres. His two most recent works, Where the Wild Things Are (2009) and Her (2013), are saturated with the whimsy aesthetic, mirroring the wonderment and childlike fascinations associated with the films. Jonze utilizes the aesthetic in order to stitch together worlds suitable for his equally whimsical characters."

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL

color, abstract shapes, the female form, a blend of both latin and american influences. welcome to my number one art obsession: america martin. the second $15,000 magically falls into my lap (*looks up, sighs*) one of her pieces is my number one wish.

america martin is an internationally acclaimed colombian-american painter and sculptor. and if she is not yet on your radar, she must be.

i am so drawn to the texture of her work. she clearly pulls from classic artists but also feels incredibly of the moment. and feels authentic in a very special way. i often find that art that is a little abstract is a better representation of the truth than exact representations, and america is a great example of that for me.

from her agency: "Martin’s art and personality encapsulates a sense of enthusiasm and hope. While born in the USA, the roots of America’s Colombian heritage deeply penetrate her work. People are Martin’s dominant subject. They are large in size, vivacious and accessible, and seem to burst out of the limits of each canvas or sculpture. Within this pulsating interplay of color, texture, line, and shapes, there is always America’s signature expression that identifies each work as an America Martin."

WHY, HELLO 2015!

why hello

while january 1 is often a time to rest, relax and recover, it's also about reflecting on the last year. so, before we pick the confetti out of our hair and jump into 2015, i thought i'd share some of my favorite end of year lists. sooo many lists and year in reviews this week! but these were some of my favorites and everything in here made me reflect.

FEEL. brain pickings best articles of the year / brain pickings is such an amazing source of reflection, thoughtfulness and just generally amazing insight. if you're looking to reflect this is a good one.

THINK. fred wilson's end of year blog post / fred wilson is an extremely successful and well-known venture capitalist and as such, someone who is very connected to trends and tech. here, he goes through some of the trends he saw in 2014. i found it to be super insightful. a couple of themes: the end of the social media phase of the internet, the rental economy, crowdfunding, the rise of youtube and so on. if you want to read more on VC's looking back and looking ahead here's another good piece. especially interesting in this one are the observations that despite the hype, wearables and the payments space didn't quite take off like we thought they might in 2014.

CREATE. fast company's 13 inspiring stories from 2014 / lots of my favorite fast company articles from this year on this list. so much inspiring and interesting stuff here! most of them are about a creative person that had a compelling idea and was able to build a successful business around it. definitely one to bookmark.

read away and happy 2015!

CUZ IT'S PRETTY: INSTA EDITION

lately, i am finding a lot of inspiration - and discovering so many exciting designers - on instagram. i thought i would share a few in case you are looking to diversify your instagram feed from sunsets and selfies. the thing i love the most about instagram is that it gives you a window into how a creative person sees the world in the ordinary moments of their day. it allows you to see beauty and design and interest where you might not on your own.

i also appreciate that instagram is a space where artists can explore in a more casual way. i’ve mentioned two artists i follow (justina blakenly in this post and dschwen in this post) who started side projects for fun on instagram that became incredibly successful and took them to new, unexpected opportunities.

take a look at some of my favorite sources of inspiration on instagram below and don’t forget to follow @thebossaesthetic for a window into where i see design.

(note: hover over the images for info and see below for links!)

@happymundane, because color, line.

@kitato, because he showcases people is such pretty ways.

@julieskitchen, because she plays with food (but not in the “here’s a delicious pie i ate” kinda way) and makes the prettiest patterns.

@littlecoal, because his photos always make me pause. and on instagram (scrollscrollscroll) that means a lot.

@macroe, a study in landscape and simplicity.

@huxsterized, because COLOR.

@maxwanger, a study in proportion and scale. definitely a favorite.

@paperfashion, because she sees her art (#shadowdancers) everywhere.

@palomaparrot, because her images have such a consistent point of view: thoughtful, clean, bright.
